Ideas Into Action: Year 3 of this innovative, life-changing programme with Refugee Entrepreneurs seeks support at official launch event.

As the UK celebrates National Refugee Week (17-23 June), the Ideas Into Action partnership supporting entrepreneurial refugees will showcase ventures from 15 new social business leaders on Tuesday 18 June in London’s Museum of the Home.

"Ideas into Action was a crucial programme for me as a social entrepreneur. I've been able to formulate the social mission of my company and with the help of a successful Crowdfunding Campaign, implement a pilot project. furthermore, I have more recently won the Poverty Prevention Challenge from the Mayor of London, which the team at Ideas into Action helped me with during the application process."
Alex Choybsnov, Founder of Mendee Digital and 2023 Ideas into Action Alumni.

Invited guests and anyone interested in hearing about or supporting over 15 new business leaders from refugee backgrounds will be coming together at The Museum of the Home on Tuesday 18 June 2024 for an evening of inspiring presentations, exciting ideas, delicious food and valuable networking.

Last year at the 2023 Demo Day, over 80 people from across the social enterprise and refugee sectors attended. Collectively, over £30,000 was raised across 11 Crowdfunding Campaigns to support the 13 new Refugee-led Start-Ups that were launched. These included businesses ranging from specialist skin-care products,  an AI tool breaking down language barriers and a community enterprise specifically for refugee women.

I would recommend to all the participants as it was the best programme to guide you to the part of becoming a social entrepreneur.”
Philomina Noel, founder of Women's Community Circle CIC and 2023 Alumni.

Jane Cordell and Hormoz Ahmadzadeh, Directors at Result, said:
“National Refugee Week is the perfect time to celebrate these entrepreneurs who have been refugees, but of course our work does not stop this week and we look forward to supporting even more people with this nationwide specialist programme. They will gain not only greater confidence in their ideas for starting or developing their own organisations, but also practical tools and funding to get started. The members of each group have previously been encouraged to support each other and, after finishing the programme, pass on their ideas to the next group. This year is the culmination of 3 cohorts of these hard working entrepreneurs and want to celebrate their exceptional achievements. In this way we expect brilliant new organisations to start up plus a stronger community between its leaders.”

Elaine Crehan, Head of Membership at Social Enterprise UK, said: “We’re delighted to be part of this vital programme to support refugees building their own social enterprises. From creating job opportunities to breaking down stigma and prejudice, the social enterprise sector has long been a space where refugees can find a sense of community and belonging. It’s wonderful to see this programme helping refugees to set up social enterprises, using their own ideas and experiences to create thriving businesses that do great things for people and the planet. It’s a pleasure to welcome all the participants into our network, where they can grow even stronger together.”

Fred Kastner, Director of Social Innovation at TERN, said: "Ideas into Action platforms the changemakers the refugee support sector needs: Lived experience leaders who are starting & growing their own social enterprise to provide solutions by refugees, for refugees (and asylum seekers). They use their lived experience and deep community connections to reach people whom other organisations find hard to reach and to create community-informed solutions, from the bottom up. We love teaming up with our partners Result CIC and our emerging community of alumni leaders to support the next generation of refugee changemakers, and to help our graduates grow their impact to the next level. So, what are you waiting for? Don't miss this amazing talent, start supporting, start investing in their impact and success!"

The Ideas Into Action partnership that brings Result, SEUK and TERN together is made possible by support from The National Lottery Community Fund, which awarded vital funding of £180,000 to the programme in 2021.

John Mothersole, Chair of England Committee at The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this scheme, helping to boost skills and employment prospects for refugees so they can lead fulfilled lives while settling into and contributing to life in the UK. It is thanks to National Lottery players that we are able to fund this impactful work that will result in improved opportunities for local economies and communities, enabling them to prosper and thrive.”
