I joined Result CIC in January this year in the new role of Creative Business Associate. I am award-winning opera director and have spent my life working in the arts as an actor, singer and writer (once upon a time a played Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera in the West End). I have also held the post of senior lecturer and professor at leading music conservatoires and universities including the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, Crane School of Music in Potsdam NY and New York University, Manhattan. My role at Result is to be a critical friend, to lead on communication and grant applications and help maintain, develop and build relationships with our clients and collaborators.
Working within the arts sector has always been challenging whether it is on the stage or in higher education. When money is short the arts are always the first thing to be abandoned despite the fact that the arts create billions of pounds for the economy, enhance learning and bring a great deal of joy to the population. Resilience, courage, perseverance, self-belief, dogged determination and a generosity of spirit are all vital skills that one must cultivate to enable one to navigate this unique environment. All of the above are foundational elements of Result’s practice and coaching.
Confidently different? I have struggled with depression and general anxiety disorder for many years and have, at times, had to dig very deep indeed to be able to function in the workplace. However, I have discovered that working with young people in college or a cast in a production and helping them to realise their potential has always helped me find purpose and a real sense of self. The ability to listen and truly hear people is a skill we must all practise as is finding the courage to be and know who we really are. I have learned how it is possible to make changes in one’s life that not only benefit oneself but also the people around you.
