When Ruth Ibegbuna asked Saif and Jane to facilitate a half-day workshop for young Mancunians to help them connect, build empathy and imagine a better future, they didn’t have to think before saying yes.
Re-rooting Greater Manchester was an inspired 3-day event for 13-16 year olds organised by ROOTS programme whose ethos is ‘relationships as resistance’. The project was designed to equip the young people with ways to positively counter growing division, fear and misinformation in the UK. Each day centred on a theme: connection, compassion and curiosity. At the interactive workshops, participants heard powerful real-life stories and collaborated with artists, influencers plus… Result’s Co-Directors!
Saif and Jane started the compassion-themed day. They shared their personal experience of how compassion towards others and self had helped them not just to survive intense periods of challenge, but also, ultimately, to thrive. Using kinetic activities, involving physical movement, the group explored how self-compassion works - including the neuroscience behind it - and what can happen when it is over-stretched. They then explored simple self-care habits they could develop when overstretched.
ROOTS’ lead at the event, Cara Kennedy, described afterwards an ‘amazing session relating their lived experiences to compassion, resilience and hope. The young people were so engaged and were able afterwards to recognise lots of positive qualities about each other – practising the self-compassion that Jane and Saif spoke about.'
Saif and Jane were impressed by the participants’ depth of thought, emotional honesty and capacity for optimism. In these troubled times, their capacity for compassion towards themselves and others inspired hope.
