September news

This month started with the end of our fifth run of the 'Achieving your Potential' programme for disabled staff at the University of Manchester. This well-established programme has resulted in more confidence and enhanced assertiveness about what needs they have as disabled people.

We were delighted to work with this group and look forward to the celebration and certificate giving event next month.

Following this work we continued our programme for NHS Managers working with disabled staff. We have already had excellent feedback from the 3 cohorts that we worked with and the early signs of strong impact are there from the final group who are part of this pilot. We will report fully in November about this project.

Mid-September was unusual in that both of us took overlapping holidays in Italy –wonderful! Perfect timing for feeling refreshed and coming back to a week with 3 full days in Liverpool!

Our strong partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) continues thanks to the hard work of Moni Akinsanya and Holly Nicholls who have worked tirelessly to push the equality agenda. Following our work with managers at the BBC and the NHS, it was great to have the opportunity to start a pilot with managers of disabled staff at LJMU. We were pleased to work with a highly engaged and motivated team of managers who came up with creative action plans.

LJMU and Moni had requested that this would be co-delivered with our partner LJMU Fellow and Artistic Director from DaDaFest, Canon Ruth Gould MBE. Such an excellent idea which got strong feedback! One manager said:

'The session provided an invaluable opportunity to confidentially talk through management issues and come up with solutions or approaches with experienced voices.'

There is a request for another run of this session in Q1 of 2019.

Our residence at LJMU continued this week with the beginning of the third run of our 'From Strength to Transformation' programme for disabled staff. We were truly blown away by the group of 10 individuals who, without exception, opened up about themselves. There is no doubt in our minds that this will be a powerful experience for all concerned, including us!
